Music Together Weekly Update 02.14.2020
Do you ever catch your child singing to themselves or making up their own songs? Chances are you answered “yes!” Children love to make music, but so many people in our culture have stopped making music themselves because now we can just push buttons to play music anytime, anywhere. Sadly, we are teaching our children how to press buttons instead of how to sing, drum, and dance. However, in our music classes, we model active music-making to help our children become music-makers instead of button-pushers!
Did You Know?
Music can be a fun way to help your child transition from one activity to the next throughout the day, both at home and in school. Singing to motivate a child to do a task instead of talking is about it is much more motivating and fun for them.
Try This at Home!
Try making up verses for different activities and tasks that you and your child might do throughout the day, singing them to the melody of “Going to Boston.” For example:
Goin’ to Boston
(songbook Page 8, CD track A5)
Come on now, let’s go to school…
Earley in the morning.
Let’s put on our shoes now…
Early in the morning.
Come on now, it’s time for dinner…
Late in the evening.
Let’s all sit right down now…
Late in the evening.
This week in class we used frame drums that we were able to borrow from a local music friend, to practice macro and micro beats during our songs. We would love to have these amazing instruments in our school. Drums have so many health benefits for our minds and bodies! Stay tuned for how you can help us reach our goal of having enough drums for all our students.
